About Blocky

Blocky is a DNS proxy for a local network that filters DNS queries and forwards allowed queries to upstream resolvers. It blocks domains using external lists with allowlisting, per-client-group rules, regex support, and inspection of response CNAMEs and IP addresses.

It also handles custom DNS records, conditional forwarding, per-group upstream resolvers, caching with prefetching, and DNS over UDP, TCP, HTTPS, TLS, QUIC and HTTPS/3, with DNSSEC validation and query logging to CSV or SQL databases.

Key features

  • Block DNS queries using external allow and denylists
  • Define allow and denylists per client group
  • Inspect response CNAMEs and IPs against block lists
  • Forward conditionally and set upstream resolvers per group
  • Cache answers with prefetching to reduce external queries
  • Support DoH, DoT, DoQ, UDP and TCP
Best for: People managing a local network who want group-based DNS filtering and local resolution control.
Good for
  • States it collects no user data, telemetry, or statistics
  • Uses freely configurable blocking lists with no hidden filtering
  • Runs stateless without a database as a single binary or Docker image
