About Caddy

Caddy is an open-source web server written in Go that obtains and renews TLS certificates automatically by default. It supports on-demand certificate provisioning during TLS handshakes for customer-owned domains, serves localhost and internal addresses over HTTPS using a self-managed local certificate authority, and can define multiple CAs and act as an ACME server for internal PKI. Configuration uses JSON with a RESTful config API, and multiple instances using the same storage can coordinate certificate management.

The public hosted demo is intentionally restricted. It requires a public DNS record for a subdomain named caddydemo, allows time for propagation, and requires a client that sends TLS ServerName indication.

Key features

  • Automatically obtains and renews TLS certificates by default
  • On-demand TLS provisioning during TLS handshakes for custom domains
  • Serves localhost and internal IPs over HTTPS via local CA
  • Define multiple CAs and run ACME server for internal PKI
  • JSON configuration manageable through RESTful config API
  • Multiple instances coordinate certificate management with shared storage
Best for: Operators and SaaS teams managing many sites or customer-owned domains that need automated certificates.

Caddy FAQ

How can I try the hosted demo?
Point DNS records for a subdomain named caddydemo to demo.caddyserver.com via CNAME, or to 138.68.4.62 and 2604:a880:2:d0::9dd:9001 via A and AAAA records, then visit it in a browser.
Why is the demo not working?
Use a direct subdomain of a registered domain, not a sub-subdomain, verify the DNS records, allow time for propagation, and use a client that sets TLS ServerName indication.
How does Caddy handle localhost and internal addresses?
It serves them over HTTPS using a locally-trusted certificate authority with short-lived, auto-renewing certificates, and can install the root into local trust stores.
