About Chromecast

CastSponsorSkip is an open-source Go program that monitors Google Cast devices on a local network. When a Cast device starts playing a YouTube video, it retrieves sponsored segment data from the SponsorBlock API and seeks to the end of those segments; it also looks for skippable YouTube ads and presses the skip button when it appears. Devices must be reachable on the same LAN, and Docker or Kubernetes deployments require host networking for discovery to work. It can be configured through environment variables, command-line flags, or a config file, and is distributed as Docker images, a Helm chart, and packages for APT, RPM, AUR, and Homebrew.

Key features

  • Watches local Google Cast devices for YouTube playback
  • Fetches sponsored segment data from the SponsorBlock API
  • Seeks past sponsored segments when a device reaches them
  • Automatically presses skip on skippable YouTube ads
  • Configurable via environment variables, flags, or config file
  • Packaged for Docker, Kubernetes, APT, RPM, AUR, and Homebrew
Best for: People who watch YouTube on Google Cast devices on their own local network and want sponsored segments handled automatically.
Good for
  • Open-source Go program with published source code
  • Written from scratch to reduce memory and CPU usage compared with sponsorblockcast
  • Multiple installation paths, including Docker, Kubernetes, package repositories, and a community Home Assistant addon
Watch out for
  • Only works with Google Cast devices reachable on the same LAN
  • Docker and Kubernetes deployments must enable host networking for device discovery
  • Ad skipping is limited to skippable ads and depends on the external SponsorBlock API
