About CiteMe

CiteMe creates formatted references from a DOI, PubMed ID, ISBN, URL, or paper title. It searches scholarly indexes and registries such as OpenAlex, CrossRef, Semantic Scholar, and PubMed, then formats the matching metadata in styles including APA, MLA, Chicago, Harvard, and Vancouver. The source describes more than 60 styles, with thousands more available on request for niche formats.

It also includes a reference checker for flagging broken identifiers and records that need manual review, and a PDF tool that extracts references into RIS or BibTeX files. Each result shows the metadata source. When a generated fallback is used, the result is labeled as needing review rather than presented as a scholarly record. Searching requires no account.

Key features

  • Creates citations from a DOI, PubMed ID, ISBN, URL, or paper title
  • Searches OpenAlex, CrossRef, Semantic Scholar, PubMed, and other scholarly databases
  • Shows the metadata source for each citation result
  • Labels generated fallback results as needing review
  • Switches citation style after lookup without re-entering the source
  • Extracts references from a PDF into RIS or BibTeX files
Best for: Students, researchers, and writers who need formatted references from a DOI, ISBN, URL, or title and want to check a bibliography before submission.
Good for
  • No account is needed to search for and format a source
  • Shows where matching metadata was found and separates DOI presence from record existence
  • Keeps fallback results marked for review instead of presenting them as verified records
Watch out for
  • Generated fallback results need manual review before use
  • PDF-extracted references may need cleanup before they are saved or exported
  • Reports are automatically deleted after 30 days
