About Digital Himalaya

Digital Himalaya is a digital archive of multimedia ethnographic materials from the Himalayan region, covering Nepal, Tibet, and India. The project was designed by Alan Macfarlane and Mark Turin to develop strategies for storing, archiving, and distributing anthropological materials from the region. It was established in December 2000 at the University of Cambridge and later moved to Cornell University, the University of Virginia, and, from July 2014, the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. It is engaged in a long-term collaboration with Sichuan University.

The homepage lists collections including Birds of Nepal, Census of Nepal, Films, Journals, Maps, Music, Rare Books, and the Thangmi and Thak archives. It also hosts the online editions of three journals. In April 2024 the project joined the Archive Nepal family. Its resources are now accessible on the Archive Nepal platform, and the Archive Nepal team will take over management and maintenance of this website. The source does not describe search tools, download terms, or access conditions.
