About Flox

Flox provides a declared environment in a manifest file that resolves to a locked set of software versions for laptops, CI pipelines, cloud sandboxes, and AI agents. Changing the manifest updates every target to the same lock. It supports installing packages, activating environments, and starting services such as Postgres and Redis, plus building, publishing, and containerizing as standard OCI images or referencing environments directly in Kubernetes. Each environment carries a signed, hash-pinned bill of materials with lineage, with options for SSO, role-based controls, private air-gapped distribution, and SLA support.

Key features

  • Single manifest file locks versions across laptop, CI, cloud, and agents
  • Start services such as Postgres and Redis inside the environment
  • Build and publish reproducible packages for internal reuse
  • Create standard OCI container images from the same lock
  • Reference environments directly in Kubernetes without pulling images
  • Signed hash-pinned bill of materials showing package lineage
Best for: Platform teams that need to maintain the same environment for developers and AI agents from development through production.
Good for
  • Same locked software versions run on laptop, CI, cloud, and agents
  • Reproducibility uses Nix without requiring users to write Nix code
  • Each environment includes a signed, hash-pinned bill of materials

Flox FAQ

How does Flox keep laptop, CI, and agent environments the same?
One manifest.toml resolves to one lock, and each target runs that exact software; changing the manifest updates every target.
Do I need to write Nix to use Flox?
No, reproducible builds are powered by Nix under the hood and you do not write Nix code.
Can environments be distributed privately?
Yes, environments and packages can be shipped from your own registry on your network, air-gapped, without dependency on the public internet.
