About FontEdit

FontEdit is a desktop application for converting fixed-width desktop fonts into byte array representations for use in embedded system displays. A user imports a font from the operating system, edits individual glyphs with a mouse-controlled editor, adds new glyphs, and exports the font as source code. Automatic import is described as best-effort, so an imported font should be usable right away but may need manual adjustment.

Font documents are saved to a file that the source describes as cross-platform. Since version 1.1.0, partial exports are available, which allow only the characters an application needs to be exported. The app is written in C++ with a Qt interface, was tested on Windows, Linux, and macOS, and is distributed under the GPL v3 license.

Key features

  • Imports fonts installed in the operating system for editing
  • Edits individual font glyphs with a mouse-controlled pixel editor
  • Adds glyphs by copying, starting from scratch, or from a typed character
  • Exports fonts as C, Arduino PROGMEM, or Python byte arrays
  • Saves font documents to a file that can move between operating systems
  • Exports only selected characters through partial export, from version 1.1.0
Best for: Developers who build software for embedded displays and need a font converted into byte array source code.
Good for
  • Open source under the GPL v3 license
  • Font document files can be moved between Windows, Linux, and macOS
  • Partial export limits the output to only the characters an application uses
Watch out for
  • Automatic font import is best-effort and may need manual glyph editing
  • The source describes the tool as intended for fixed-width desktop fonts
  • Custom fonts must be registered with the operating system before they can be imported

Yes. The source says that to load a custom font, it should first be registered in the operating system.
Which code formats can FontEdit export?
It can export a C file (also usable with C++), an Arduino-specific C file using PROGMEM, and a Python list or bytes object compatible with Python 2.x/3.x and MicroPython.
