About HyperPhysics

HyperPhysics is a physics concept reference created in 1998 by Dr. Carl Rod Nave of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Georgia State University. It is built from lecture materials and organizes physics and astrophysics topics as small linked pages, or cards. Concept maps for each division of physics are meant to show related material and suggest where to go next.

The site also includes indexes for video and demonstrations, class materials, papers, example problems, tables, and focused applications. It links to connections in chemistry, geophysics, and biology. Some formulas and standard problems are implemented as JavaScript calculations. Translations into Spanish are available, and German, Italian, and Chinese translations are listed as licensed and underway. The project has also sent CD or DVD copies to 86 countries, according to the site. Questions, permission requests, and comments go to [email protected]. Copyright remains with the project.

Key features

  • Concept maps linking material within each division of physics
  • Linked pages with a back feature to retrace a path of exploration
  • JavaScript calculations for formulas and standard physics problems
  • Indexes for videos, demonstrations, class materials, and papers
  • Connections to chemistry, geophysics, and biology material
  • Full site available as a DVD or USB copy for offline use
Best for: Physics students, teachers, and instructors who want linked conceptual explanations and numerical examples, including high school teachers and those building course materials.
Good for
  • Concept maps and extensive linking help users move between related topics.
  • The Merlot Classic Award for 2005 cited its comprehensive coverage of most of physics and its use of multimedia and linking.
Watch out for
  • Google search results open outside HyperPhysics, and the index should be closed before using the search box.
  • Copyright remains with the project, and translated mirrors require a license from the project.
