About iperf

iperf3 performs active measurements of maximum achievable bandwidth on IP networks over TCP, UDP, and SCTP. For each test it reports throughput/bitrate, loss, and other parameters, with tunable timing, protocol, and buffer settings.

It provides a zero-copy sending mode, optional JSON output, CPU affinity setting, and a library version for use in other programs. iperf3 is not backwards compatible with the original iperf, and only Ubuntu Linux, FreeBSD, and macOS are officially supported.

Key features

  • Measures TCP, UDP, and SCTP bandwidth through active tests
  • Reports throughput, bitrate, and loss for each test
  • Tunes timing, protocol, and buffer parameters
  • Provides zero-copy sending mode with --zerocopy flag
  • Outputs test results in optional JSON format
  • Sets CPU affinity with --affinity flag
Best for: Network staff and researchers who need to measure achievable throughput between hosts on IP networks.
Good for
  • Supports TCP, UDP, and SCTP measurement in one tool
  • Reports throughput, loss, and other parameters per test
  • Includes library version and JSON output for use in other programs
Watch out for
  • Not backwards compatible with the original iperf
  • Official support limited to Ubuntu Linux, FreeBSD, and macOS
