About Piano Scribe

Piano Scribe converts raw audio into MIDI. It uses Onsets and Frames, a neural network trained for polyphonic piano transcription, to process a recording of solo piano. Users can record themselves playing or choose an audio file with solo piano from their device, then save the result as a MIDI file.

Processing runs locally in the browser using Magenta.js and TensorFlow.js. Longer audio takes noticeably longer to transcribe and can make the browser sluggish. Recording is not available on some iOS devices because of WebAudio API issues. The site reports testing on Android and desktop Chrome, Safari and Firefox. Transcription is significantly slower on Safari because of a WebKit bug. The site also notes that singing can be transcribed, but the result is played by a piano and may not resemble the singer's voice.

It is designed for audio of solo piano, either recorded directly in the app or uploaded as a file from the device.
Why might recording not work on my iOS device?
The site states that WebAudio API issues prevent the model from working on some iOS devices. It suggests trying a different device or uploading a file instead.
