About Prodmodel

Prodmodel is a build system for data science pipelines where data, Python code and configuration are inputs to transformation rules. Rules form a dependency graph, and their outputs are cached, version-controlled targets such as models or datasets; only rules affected by a change are re-executed.

Use requires Python 3.6 or later, code structured as functions that rules can call, and a build.py file defining inputs and rules. Remote data sources such as SQL servers are not always tracked automatically and may need manual reload.

Key features

  • Tracks data, Python code and config dependencies as rule DAG
  • Reuses cached outputs when code path and data unchanged
  • Packages model files with encoders and transformation code
  • Provides IterableDataTarget for iterating datasets as dicts
  • Lists build file targets with prodmodel ls command
  • Deletes old target cache files by cutoff date
Best for: Python data science users who build models through function-based pipelines with shared code and data.
Good for
  • Re-executes only rules affected by a change instead of the whole pipeline
  • Tracks code and data dependencies with cached, version-controlled outputs
  • Packages model files together with encoders and transformation code for deployment
Watch out for
  • Requires code to be structured as functions that rules can call
  • Requires at least Python 3.6
  • Cannot always track changes in remote sources such as SQL servers

Prodmodel FAQ

How do I install Prodmodel?
It requires at least Python 3.6 and is installed with pip install prodmodel --user.
How do I build a model?
Create a build.py file defining inputs and rules, then run prodmodel my_model from its directory.
How are remote data sources handled?
Change tracking is not always feasible for remote sources, so use --force_external for manual control over reloading.
