About SILVA

SILVA provides quality-checked and aligned ribosomal RNA sequence datasets covering small subunit (16S/18S, SSU) and large subunit (23S/28S, LSU) sequences for Bacteria, Archaea and Eukarya. It offers Parc and Ref NR 99 versions with different minimum lengths, basic or strong filtering, and guide-tree availability, with downloads including ARB format.

It also provides search, browser, TestProbe, TestPrime, ACT, SILVAngs, alignment/classification/tree, and NGS classification tools. Release notes state the redesigned curation workflow had not yet been applied to the eukaryotic dataset in the first version of SSU release 144.

Key features

  • Aligned SSU 16S/18S sequences for Bacteria, Archaea, Eukarya
  • Aligned LSU 23S/28S sequences for three domains of life
  • Parc and Ref NR 99 datasets with different quality filtering
  • Sequence search, browser and taxonomy navigation tools
  • TestProbe and TestPrime for probe and primer evaluation
  • Alignment, classification and tree service plus NGS classification
Best for: Researchers working with rRNA sequences for identification, classification and taxonomy.
Good for
  • Quality-checked and aligned SSU and LSU rRNA datasets
  • Coverage of Bacteria, Archaea and Eukarya
  • Multiple search, classification and tree analysis tools
Watch out for
  • Redesigned curation workflow had not yet been applied to eukaryotic dataset in release 144
  • Ref NR datasets use higher length thresholds that exclude shorter sequences
  • Guide trees are available for Ref NR datasets but not Parc datasets
