About The Minecraft Archive Project

The Minecraft Archive Project (MAP) is a web-based preservation initiative created by Leonard Richardson to prevent the loss of player-created Minecraft content, inspired by the disappearance of 1990s ZZT game worlds shared via defunct BBSes and online services. MAP collects content from the discontinued official Minecraft forum, Planet Minecraft, and CurseForge, organizing it into ~50GB ZIP files paired with HTML finding aids. It also hosts third-party Minecraft-related archives via its Internet Archive collection, and catalogs public Minecraft-related Git repositories by creation date.

Key features

  • Captures player-created Minecraft maps, mods, resource packs, and skins
  • Organizes archives into ~50GB ZIP files with HTML finding aids
  • Hosts third-party Minecraft-related archives on the Internet Archive
  • Catalogs public Minecraft-related Git repositories by creation date
  • Collects content from discontinued official Minecraft forum and public hosting sites
  • Provides access to archived Minecraft Pocket Edition content from 2011–2018
Best for: Nostalgic Minecraft players, game developers, and researchers seeking historical player-created Minecraft content.
Good for
  • Mitigates risk of permanent loss of player-created Minecraft cultural content
  • Aggregates content from multiple major public Minecraft community and hosting platforms
  • Provides organized archives with finding aids to simplify content navigation
Watch out for
  • Project creator acknowledges it can only preserve a tiny fraction of total Minecraft cultural history
  • No new content can be collected from the discontinued official Minecraft forum (shut down June 2019)
  • Archiving focus is limited to packaged binaries, images, and cloned Git repositories
