In development it serves source files on demand over native ESM with dependency pre-bundling, and hot module replacement reflects changes as they are saved. For production it generates optimized builds using tree-shaking, built-in minification and fine-grained chunking control powered by Rolldown.
Projects are scaffolded through npm, Yarn, pnpm, Bun or Deno. Vite handles TypeScript, JSX, CSS, Workers and WebAssembly, with further capabilities added through plugins. Its plugin system extends the Rollup plugin interface with Vite-specific options, the API is fully typed, and server-side rendering is supported for custom setups or for building an SSR framework.
