About Workshop Walker

Workshop Walker is an open source alternate interface for browsing the Steam Workshop. It is aimed at improving discoverability and filtering of Workshop items. The project is written in Rust with a Svelte user interface, and it is licensed under MPL-2.0. A live version is available at workshop-walker.disconsented.com.

The project adds dependency discovery, which shows everything that depends on a given item. It also adds language detection for filtering items by language, which the author describes as a heuristic process. Items can be given extended classifications and properties, and users can submit new ones or vote on existing entries for relevance. Dependency lookups use SurrealDB relationship modeling, which the author says allows reversed dependency relationships to be queried efficiently.

Key features

  • Find all Workshop items that depend on a selected item
  • Filter Workshop items by detected language
  • Extended item classification and properties
  • Submit new properties or vote on existing entries for relevance
  • Reverse dependency lookups built on SurrealDB relationship modeling
Best for: Steam Workshop users who want to find item dependencies or filter items by language, and developers who want to contribute to an open source browsing tool.
Good for
  • Open source under the MPL-2.0 license
  • Dependency lookups are designed to be efficient through reversed relationships
  • A live version is available for use without installing the project
Watch out for
  • Language support is handled heuristically, so language detection may not be exact
  • Feature contributions are asked to start as an issue, and the maintainer may decline them

Workshop Walker FAQ

How do I suggest a game or tag to be added?

How should I propose a new feature?
The contributing guidelines ask that features be suggested as an issue first, so the author can indicate whether they will accept it. Each contributed piece of code adds to the maintenance burden.
