About World Data Center for Cosmic Rays

The World Data Center for Cosmic Rays (WDCCR) is a database of cosmic-ray neutron observations. It was established in 1957 as part of the International Geophysical Year, to hold cosmic-ray neutron observations in unified formats. The center moved to the Solar-Terrestrial Environment Laboratory at Nagoya University in 1991, and since July 2009 its work has been carried out at the Geospace Research Center, Nagoya University. The database includes world-wide observations of pressure-corrected, scale-adjusted 1-hour counts since 1953.

Data is offered in three formats. The longformat (4096-byte) stores one month per line and the shortformat stores half a day per line, and both include header sections with information on data use. The cardformat (80-byte) stores half a day per line without a header and is used by the center for internal data management, such as finding incorrect values. The homepage recommends the longformat or shortformat for research. Data plots in various formats are also available. The site states that all data can be used freely, and asks users to acknowledge the WDCCR in publications based on the database.

Key features

  • Pressure-corrected, scale-adjusted 1-hour cosmic-ray neutron counts from world-wide observations
  • Data coverage from 1953 onward
  • Longformat files with one month of data per line
  • Shortformat files with half-day data per line and a header section
  • Cardformat files with half-day data per line and no header
  • Data plots in various formats, plus yearly files in PS and PDF
Best for: Researchers who need historical cosmic-ray neutron count data for scientific analysis.
Good for
  • All data is stated to be usable freely, subject to acknowledgment of the WDCCR.
  • Holds records from 1953 onward, in multiple formats.
  • The longformat and shortformat include header sections with data usage information.
Watch out for
  • The cardformat has no header section.
  • The homepage recommends the longformat or shortformat for research rather than the cardformat.
  • Users are asked to acknowledge the WDCCR in publications based on the database.
