About ACT UP Oral History Project

The ACT UP Oral History Project is an archive of 187 interviews with members of ACT UP, the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power, New York. The project is coordinated by Jim Hubbard and Sarah Schulman. The interviews record what motivated members to act and how they organized their work, with the stated aim of documenting how ordinary people brought about social change. The project also includes the Latina/o Caucus Archive, a mixed media collection developed by Julián de Mayo and drawn largely from the personal collections of surviving Caucus members.

The original tapes and hard drives are preserved at Harvard University Library, and the homepage links to the library's catalog entry for the collection. Use of the interviews requires permission. Permission requests and citation format questions are directed to Sarah Schulman through the site's contact form. The homepage does not describe how the interviews can be searched or played back online.
