About Aeromancy

Aeromancy is an open-source framework for machine learning experiments. It records details of the runtime environment in which an experiment ran, such as dataset versions and library dependency versions, which experiment trackers often omit. The project provides a versioning scheme that covers system runtimes and external datasets, along with a set of best practices. It aims to make experiments easier to replicate, but it is a pre-release project.

The framework requires a fixed software stack: Weights and Biases as the experiment tracker, S3-compatible object storage for artifacts (Ceph is given as an example), Docker for virtualization, pdm as the Python package manager, and Git for revision control. Its documentation is in an early state, and support may be limited while it remains pre-release.

Key features

  • Versioning scheme covering system runtimes and external datasets
  • Tracks experimental runtime environments and dependency versions
  • Integrates with Weights and Biases as the experiment tracker
  • Stores artifacts in S3-compatible object storage
  • Uses Docker for virtualization and Git for revision control
  • Developer reference with architectural overview and glossary of terms
Best for: Machine learning practitioners and researchers who can adopt its required software stack and want experiment records that include dataset and dependency versions.
Good for
  • Open source under the Apache-2.0 license
  • Records dataset versions and system runtimes, which standard experiment trackers may not capture
  • Includes design documentation covering architecture and terminology
Watch out for
  • Requires a specific software stack: Weights and Biases, S3-compatible storage, Docker, pdm and Git
  • Pre-release, so support may be limited
  • Documentation is in a very early state
