About Notebooks

Notebooks is a Docker-based starter kit for running machine learning work in Jupyter notebooks. It publishes a set of prebuilt images that bundle JupyterLab with common data science libraries, so users can pick a tag and start working instead of assembling a runtime environment themselves.

Images cover various combinations of Keras, TensorFlow and PyTorch with CUDA versions 8 through 11, alongside CPU-only tags. Every image includes scikit-learn, pandas, matplotlib, seaborn, OpenCV, scikit-image and the Natural Language Toolkit. Only Python 3 is supported, since Python 2 is deprecated. A compatibility chart lists the minimum Nvidia driver required for each CUDA tag, and there is no default 'latest' tag, so a specific tag must be chosen.

Key features

  • Docker images bundling JupyterLab, scikit-learn, pandas and visualization libraries
  • Tags for TensorFlow/Keras, PyTorch and multiple CUDA versions, plus CPU-only options
  • Compatibility chart listing minimum Nvidia driver version per CUDA tag
  • Vision libraries (OpenCV, scikit-image) and Natural Language Toolkit included in all images
  • Python 3 only; Python 2 images discontinued as end-of-life
  • No default 'latest' tag; users select a specific image tag
Best for: Developers and data scientists who want a ready-made Jupyter runtime for machine learning, including GPU setups matching a specific framework and CUDA version, without building the environment themselves.
Good for
  • Spans older and newer framework versions and CUDA releases, supporting legacy as well as current environments
  • Bundles both core ML libraries and vision/NLP extras in the same images
  • Documents minimum Nvidia driver requirements per tag through a compatibility chart
Watch out for
  • There is no default 'latest' tag, so a specific tag must be chosen
  • CUDA-based images require a host Nvidia driver meeting the listed minimum version
  • Python 2 is not supported and its images are deprecated

Notebooks FAQ

Is there a default Docker image tag I can pull?
No. The 'latest' tag does not exist, described as a design choice, so you must choose one of the listed tags.
Which Python versions do the images use?
Python 3 only. Python 2 is end-of-life and therefore deprecated.
What does a CUDA image require on my host system?
An Nvidia graphics driver meeting the minimum version given for that tag; a compatibility chart lists the required driver versions.
