About AIDE

AIDE is an open-source Python package that implements an LLM agent for machine learning engineering. It drafts, debugs and evaluates Python scripts against a user-defined metric, organizing attempts in a solution tree where metric feedback guides further patches.

Users point it at a dataset with a goal and evaluation metric in plain English via CLI, Python import, or a local Streamlit interface. Use requires an LLM API key and user-supplied data, goal and metric, and runs produce logs//best_solution.py and tree_plot.html.

Key features

  • Drafts, debugs and benchmarks ML code against user-defined metric
  • Accepts dataset path with plain-English goal and evaluation metric
  • Builds solution tree where scripts branch via LLM-generated patches
  • HTML visualiser for inspecting solution tree and node code
  • Streamlit interface for setting goal, metric and viewing runs
  • Works with OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini or OpenAI-API-compatible local models
Best for: Agent-architecture researchers and ML practitioners who want to experiment with tree-search code generation for ML tasks.
Good for
  • Open-source Python package installable with pip install aideml
  • Supports OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini and OpenAI-API-compatible local models
  • Provides CLI, Python import, HTML tree visualiser and Streamlit UI
Watch out for
  • Described as reference build for experimentation, with separate Weco product for production use
  • Web UI requires cloning the repository and running Streamlit locally
  • Requires user-supplied LLM API key, dataset, goal and evaluation metric

AIDE FAQ

How do I run AIDE from the command line?
Install with pip install -U aideml, set export OPENAI_API_KEY, then run aide with data_dir, goal and eval, for example aide data_dir="example_tasks/house_prices" goal="Predict the sales price for each house" eval="RMSE between log-prices".
How do I use the Streamlit web interface?
Clone the repository locally, run pip install -e ., go to aide/webui and run streamlit run app.py, then use the sidebar to enter the API key, upload data, set Goal and Metric, and press Run AIDE.
Which coding models can AIDE use?
It supports OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, or any local LLM that speaks the OpenAI API. The default is gpt-4-turbo, changeable with agent.code.model, for example aide agent.code.model="claude-4-sonnet".
