About Lumen

Lumen is an open-source agent framework for chatting with data and for retrieval-augmented generation. It turns natural language into SQL or Python data pipelines, charts, data tables, dashboards, and reports, and can use documents and embeddings as context. Generated pipelines and visual outputs use a declarative specification that can be serialized, shared, continued in a notebook, or composed into a dashboard. It requires Python 3 on Linux, Windows, or Mac, and LLM outputs need inspection for mistakes.

Key features

  • Generate SQL pipelines from local files, SQL databases, data lakes
  • Create charts, data tables, and dashboards from natural language
  • Use documents and embeddings to provide context for RAG
  • Inspect, refine, and manually edit LLM-generated outputs
  • Summarize results and extract key insights via LLM
  • Extend with custom agents, tools, and domain analyses
Best for: Python users and domain teams who want natural-language data queries and shareable visualizations.
Good for
  • Open source under BSD-3-Clause license and extensible with custom agents and tools
  • Declarative pipelines can be serialized, shared, and reused in notebooks or dashboards
  • Works with local or remote files, SQL databases, and data lakes
Watch out for
  • LLM outputs can contain mistakes and need inspection and manual editing
  • Requires Python 3 on Linux, Windows, or Mac with conda or PyPI installation
