About Anvil

Anvil is Foundry's local Ethereum node built for development and testing. It runs entirely in-memory for fast execution, and includes pre-funded development accounts, instant mining, forking of any EVM-compatible chain at a specified block, chain state dump and load functionality, custom RPC methods (including account impersonation and time manipulation), and full transaction execution tracing. Default development accounts use a publicly known mnemonic, so users should use custom mnemonics when forking mainnet or interacting with public RPC providers.

Key features

  • In-memory local Ethereum node for development and testing
  • Pre-funded default development accounts with customizable parameters
  • Fork any EVM-compatible chain at a specified block number
  • Multiple mining modes with pending transaction pool inspection
  • Chain state dump and load for reproducible test environments
  • Custom RPC methods for account impersonation and time manipulation
Best for: Ethereum developers building and testing smart contracts or decentralized applications in local development environments.
Good for
  • Fast in-memory execution suited for local development workflows
  • Native support for forking mainnet and other EVM chains
  • Pre-configured funded accounts reduce initial testing setup effort
Watch out for
  • Default development accounts are publicly known, requiring custom mnemonics for mainnet forking or public RPC use
  • No public pricing information is available
  • The tool is not open source
