About Bifrost

Bifrost is an open-source AI gateway that provides a single OpenAI-compatible API for accessing more than 23 model providers, including OpenAI, Anthropic, AWS Bedrock, Google Vertex, and Azure. It can be started locally with npx or Docker and includes a web interface for configuration, real-time monitoring, and analytics.

Core capabilities include automatic fallbacks between providers and models, load balancing across multiple API keys and providers, and semantic caching. Enterprise deployments are described separately and add features such as adaptive load balancing, clustering, guardrails, and an MCP gateway.

Key features

  • Single OpenAI-compatible API for more than 23 model providers
  • Automatic fallbacks between providers and models
  • Load balancing across multiple API keys and providers
  • Semantic caching based on similarity of requests
  • Model Context Protocol support for external tools such as databases and web search
  • Budget management using virtual keys, teams, and customer budgets
Best for: Development and platform teams that call several AI model providers and want one gateway for routing, failover, and monitoring.
Good for

  • Can be started with a single Docker or npx command and a web interface for configuration
Watch out for
  • Adaptive load balancing, clustering, guardrails, and the MCP gateway are described as enterprise deployment capabilities, and the source does not confirm their availability in the open-source repository
  • Pricing is listed as unknown
