About BlockAGI

BlockAGI is an open-source, self-hosted research agent written in Python 3 with LangChain and OpenAI. It conducts iterative, domain-specific research, searching, gathering, refining and evaluating information on its own, and produces detailed narrative reports. Progress is shown in real time through a web interface that displays the agent's decision-making, execution steps and latest results.

It was initially designed for cryptocurrency topics but is customizable to other domains and can pull live data from the internet or your own database. Setup requires Poetry and Playwright, plus an OpenAI API key configured in a .env file. The project states it has been tested to work well with gpt-3.5-turbo-16k for most research tasks. Reports are described as staying with the user and the chosen LLM provider, so research content is sent to that external provider.

Key features

  • Iterative, domain-specific research agent producing detailed narrative reports
  • Real-time web interface showing agent decisions, execution progress and latest results
  • Searches, gathers, refines and evaluates information on its own
  • Accesses real-time data from the internet or your own database
  • Customizable research domain beyond the original cryptocurrency focus
  • Concise, hackable Python/LangChain code; no external vector datastore required

Good for
  • Open-source code built on LangChain that is described as concise and easy to modify
  • No Docker, sandboxing or external vector datastore needed, simplifying setup
  • Stated to work well with gpt-3.5-turbo-16k, which is cheaper than gpt-4 on most research tasks
Watch out for
