About Bobby

Bobby is a client-side mod for Minecraft: Java Edition, built for the Fabric platform. It allows render distances greater than a server's view-distance setting by recording chunks the server sends, storing them in .minecraft/.bobby, and loading and displaying those chunks later when they fall outside the server's view distance. Optionally, it can load chunks the server has never sent from an existing single-player world whose folder has been renamed to "bobby-fallback".

The mod's config file reloads automatically when changed, and an in-game config screen is available by installing ModMenu and ClothConfig. It is licensed LGPL-3.0-only. Since the extra terrain comes from previously received chunks or a fallback world, the mod does not generate new server-side terrain on its own.

Key features

  • Renders terrain beyond the server's view-distance setting
  • Stores server-sent chunks in .minecraft/.bobby
  • Reloads stored chunks when outside server view-distance
  • Optional fallback world for chunks the server never sent
  • Automatically reloads its config file when changed
  • In-game config screen via ModMenu and ClothConfig
Best for: Minecraft: Java Edition players on Fabric who want to see farther than a server's configured view distance.
Good for
  • Runs client-side, so it does not require server-side installation
  • Supports a long list of Minecraft: Java Edition versions, from 1.16.2–1.16.5 through 26.3
  • Published six years ago and updated recently, with 21.4M downloads and 5.8K followers
Watch out for
  • Available only for the Fabric platform
  • Beyond-view-distance terrain depends on chunks the server previously sent or a fallback single-player world
  • An in-game config screen requires installing ModMenu and ClothConfig separately

Bobby FAQ

Does Bobby need to be installed on the server?
No. Its supported environment is client-side, and it renders terrain beyond the server's view-distance setting from the client.
Where does Bobby store the chunks it records?
It records and stores all chunks sent by the server in .minecraft/.bobby, then loads and displays them later when they are outside the server's view distance.
How do I use a single-player world to fill in missing chunks?
Rename the world's folder (not the name of the world) to "bobby-fallback"; Bobby can then use that existing single-player world to load chunks the server has never sent.
