About Canadian Disaster Database

The Canadian Disaster Database records natural, technological and conflict events, excluding war, since 1900 that occurred in Canada or abroad and directly affected Canadians. For each event it lists where and when it occurred, the number of injuries, evacuations and fatalities, and an estimate of costs.

The data can be downloaded as a spreadsheet through the Open Government Portal and includes geospatial information for use in external mapping tools. Additions are typically made years after an event concludes once financial data stabilizes, recent cost information may be preliminary and incomplete, and the data may not be suitable for comparative analysis.

Which events are included?
Significant events since 1900 meeting criteria such as 10 or more killed, 100 or more affected, injured, infected, evacuated or homeless, an appeal for assistance, historical significance, or significant damage.
