About CaribouLite

CaribouLite is a Raspberry Pi HAT that turns 40-pin Raspberry Pi boards into a transmit and receive 6 GHz software-defined radio. The repository contains driver, firmware, hardware, software and examples for a dual-channel, standalone radio platform intended for makers, hackers and researchers.

It mounts on an unpowered 40-pin board and is installed by cloning the repository and running install.sh with an internet connection. It does not support Raspberry Pi 5 because of the missing SMI interface, and installation requires kernel headers, password entry, and disabled SPI and ARM I2C overlays.

Key features

  • Transmit and receive SDR operation up to 6 GHz on Raspberry Pi
  • 40-pin Raspberry Pi HAT form factor, including RPI-Zero mounting example
  • Dual-channel standalone software-defined radio hardware design
  • SoapySDR and SoapyRemote API tools build and installation
  • SMI stream kernel module with IIR DSP library and utilities
  • Install script verifies Raspberry Pi boot configuration for compatibility
Best for: Makers, hackers, and researchers experimenting with SDR on 40-pin Raspberry Pi boards.
Good for
  • OSHWA-certified project hardware design
  • Automated setup script installs dependencies, DSP library and Soapy API tools
  • Repository includes driver, firmware, hardware, software and examples
Watch out for
  • Does not support Raspberry Pi 5 due to missing SMI interface
  • Installation requires internet connection and user password entry
  • Kernel headers required, with module recompilation after pulls or kernel upgrades

CaribouLite FAQ

Does CaribouLite work on Raspberry Pi 5?
No. The source states it is not supported on Raspberry Pi 5 due to architectural changes and removal of the SMI interface.
How is CaribouLite installed?
Mount it on an unpowered 40-pin Pi, boot the Pi, clone the repository, and run install.sh with an internet connection. You will be asked to enter your password during installation.
Do I need to change Raspberry Pi settings?
Yes. The SPI and ARM I2C overlays should be disabled, and the installer only checks /boot/config.txt and warns about problems, so you must adjust the parameters yourself.
