About Bashly

Bashly is a Ruby command-line tool that generates Bash scripts from a YAML file describing commands, subcommands, arguments and flags. Running bashly init creates a sample configuration, and bashly generate produces a standalone script that parses and validates input, shows help messages, and runs separate code files for each command.

The generated script does not run when the command line is invalid. Edited command code can be merged back into the output, and Bashly can add optional library functions and auto-generated markdown and man page documentation.

Key features

  • Generate standalone Bash script from YAML configuration
  • Parse required or optional arguments, flags and subcommands
  • Generate usage texts and help screens for subcommands
  • Block script execution unless command line is valid
  • Merge separate per-command code files into final script
  • Auto-generate markdown and man page documentation
Best for: People writing Bash command-line tools who want argument parsing and help text generated from YAML.
Good for
  • Generates a single, standalone Bash script
  • Generated script is described as human-readable and shellcheck- and shfmt-compliant
  • Keeps per-command code in separate files that can be merged back
