About clifm

clifm is a text-based file manager that works from a shell-like command line with no graphical interface, text interface, or menus. Users type commands directly, as in a regular shell, to perform operations such as copy, move, remove, and organize files.

It includes bookmarks, search, file selection, tags, filters, previews including image previews, bulk operations, archiving, trash, a file opener, directory jumper, autocommands, workspaces, plugins, autosuggestions, and command-line expansions. It can run on the kernel built-in console, over SSH or other remote sessions, and on VT102-only terminals. Its documentation states zero data collection and no connection to the outside world.

Key features

  • File search using glob patterns and regular expressions
  • File previews including image previews
  • Bulk rename, create, remove, and symlink creation
  • Freedesktop-compliant trash system for deleted files
  • Bookmarks and directory jumper for navigation
  • Archiving and compression including Zstandard and ISO 9660
