About castero

castero is a terminal-based podcast client. It runs in a text user interface and lets users add, delete, and refresh podcast feeds, and listen to episodes from the command line. It is open source and released under the MIT License. It is installed with pip from PyPI or manually from its Git repository.

Playback depends on an external media player. castero requires Python 3.5 or later, sqlite3, and at least one of VLC 2.2.3 or later, or mpv with libmpv 0.14.0 or later. Its controls are keyboard-based, and a help screen listing them opens with the h key. Users can save episodes for offline playback and import or export subscriptions as OPML files through command line flags.

Key features

  • Add, delete, and refresh podcast feeds from within the client
  • Save episodes for offline playback
  • Build a playback queue and move to the next queued episode
  • Mark episodes as played or unplayed
  • Import and export subscriptions as OPML files using command line flags
  • Adjust volume, playback speed, and seek position during playback
Best for: Users who prefer keyboard-driven terminal applications for managing and listening to podcasts, and who are comfortable installing Python packages and an external media player.
