About CrowBook

CrowBook is an open source program that converts books written in Markdown into HTML, PDF, and EPUB files. Its stated focus is novels and fiction. The project aims to let authors write without handling formatting or typography, and its default settings are intended to produce readable books with correct typography.

CrowBook can be installed from precompiled binaries or built from source with Cargo, the Rust package manager. PDF output requires a working LaTeX installation, preferably xelatex. Inline HTML inside Markdown is not implemented, and the project states it probably will not be, because the goal is books that can also be generated as PDF.

Key features

  • Converts Markdown book files to HTML, PDF, and EPUB output
  • Produces EPUB output in version 2 or version 3
  • Cleans input text by removing extra spaces and using curly quotes
  • Applies French typography rules when the book language is set to French
  • Converts links between local Markdown files into links inside the document
  • Reads inline YAML metadata for single-file texts run with the --single option
Best for: Authors of novels and fiction who write in Markdown and want formatted HTML, PDF, or EPUB output without manual typesetting.

CrowBook FAQ

Does CrowBook need LaTeX to make PDF files?
Yes. The project states that PDF rendering requires a working installation of LaTeX, preferably xelatex.
Can I convert a short text that is only one file?
Yes. Metadata can be embedded at the beginning of the Markdown file, and the --single or -s option runs CrowBook directly on that file without a separate book configuration file.
