About Databag

Databag is a self-hosted, federated messenger. Users run their own server node, and accounts on different nodes can communicate. Messages are organized by topic, and sealed topics use end-to-end encryption that the hosting admin cannot view.

It supports audio and video calls, though NAT traversal requires a separate relay server. Running a node requires a DNS name pointing to the node with a certificate, with container images for arm64 and amd64. Apps are listed for F-Droid and the Google and Apple stores.

Key features

  • Federated messaging between accounts on different nodes
  • Sealed topics with end-to-end encryption

Best for: People who want to host their own messaging server for themselves or their family.
