About DataStream

DataStream is Canada’s open access platform for sharing water and sediment quality data, organized through regional hubs including Pacific, Mackenzie, Lake Winnipeg, Great Lakes, and Atlantic. It aggregates data from 373 monitoring groups across more than 60,000 monitoring sites, holding over 86 million observations to support freshwater health research and decision-making.

The platform standardizes all shared data to the WQX water quality data exchange standard, making datasets easier to interpret, integrate, and reuse. Users can explore data via map-based search, create one-click visualizations to compare results to national aquatic ecosystem health guidelines, and access machine-readable datasets with clear licensing. Contributors can upload data with optional embargo periods, assign persistent DOIs to datasets, and track dataset versions as they are updated.

It suits researchers, community groups, government decision makers, and others working to understand or protect freshwater resources, with tools for both data consumers and contributors.

Key features

  • Map-based search to locate and discover water quality datasets
  • One-click charting tool for data exploration and trend analysis
  • WQX-standardized, machine-readable datasets with clear licensing
  • Persistent DOIs assigned to all published datasets for citation
  • Optional embargo periods for pre-publication data uploads
  • API access for integration with external tools and platforms
Best for: Researchers, community groups, and government decision makers working on freshwater health and water quality monitoring benefit most.
Good for
  • CoreTrustSeal certified for trustworthy, secure data storage
  • Open access model reduces barriers to data use and contribution
  • Standardized WQX format supports easy data integration and reuse
  • End-to-end data integrity protections prevent data corruption or loss
Watch out for
  • Geographic scope is limited to Canadian water and sediment quality data
  • Platform is not open source, so users cannot modify or self-host it
