About Ensembles

Ensembles is a real-time musical performance arranger application built with Vala and GTK and powered by FluidSynth. Instead of following the studio-recording model of most digital audio workstations, it targets live playing: users can play from more than 200 built-in voices on a 60-key on-screen keyboard with mouse and touch support, split or layer two voices, apply DSP effects such as filters, reverb and chorus, and assign those effects to on-screen knobs, sliders, a master knob and an assignable joystick.

For one-person band performance it provides auto accompaniment styles (described as work in progress), Registration Memory for automating the accompaniment, 12 sampling pads, a 10-track multitrack recorder, MIDI file playback through the built-in synthesizer, and support for external MIDI keyboards or controllers with General MIDI compatibility. Audio settings offer Alsa, PulseAudio and Jack drivers, with PipeWire support planned. The project states it is in early development and not ready for production.

Key features

  • More than 200 built-in voices; 60-key on-screen keyboard with mouse and touch support
  • Split or layer two voices for multi-voice playback
  • DSP effects including filters, reverb and chorus; assignable knobs, sliders and master knob
  • Auto accompaniment styles drawn from over 100 built-in styles, marked work in progress
  • Registration Memory, 12 assignable sampling pads and a 10-track multitrack recorder
  • MIDI file playback plus external MIDI keyboard/controller support with General MIDI compatibility
Best for: Keyboard players and live performers on Linux who want to test a performance-oriented arranger app rather than a studio DAW.
Good for
  • Focus is explicitly on live performance, distinguishing it from other digital audio workstations
  • Bundles voices, on-screen keyboard, DSP effects, accompaniment, sampling pads and multitrack recording in one app
  • Can be installed from the elementary OS App Center or compiled from source, with dependencies documented
Watch out for
  • The project states it is in early development and not ready for production
  • Auto accompaniment styles are flagged as work in progress
  • The Jack driver currently only works when compiled natively, outside the Flatpak sandbox, and PulseAudio can stutter if FluidSynth cannot set realtime priority
