About GEISHA

GEISHA is an online repository of in situ hybridization images and corresponding metadata for genes expressed in the chicken embryo during the first six days of development. It is a public resource funded by the National Institutes of Health, USA, and hosted by the University of Arizona.

Visitors can browse by embryo stage, anatomical location, gene name or ID, and citation keyword, or use QuickSearch with additional fields such as Gene ID and Gene Ontology keywords. It also provides Gene Family QuickSearch, links to ZEBrA zebra finch brain images, and a human disease gene search.

Key features

  • Browse expression records by embryo stage and anatomical location
  • Search by gene name, GEISHA ID, Gene ID, or citation keyword
  • Filter by multiple parameters including Gene Ontology keywords
  • Gene Family QuickSearch for transcription factors, growth factors, receptors and microRNAs
  • Links to ZEBrA zebra finch brain in situ hybridization images
  • Human disease gene search integrating GEISHA expression data
Best for: Researchers and students studying gene expression in early chicken embryo development.
Good for
  • Public access to in situ hybridization images and metadata
  • Search by stage, anatomy, gene identifiers, and ontology keywords
  • Connection to ZEBrA images and human disease gene information

GEISHA FAQ

What organisms and stages does GEISHA cover?
Genes expressed in the chicken embryo during the first six days of development.
How can I look up gene expression information?
Use Browse by stage, anatomical location, gene name or ID, citation keyword, or multiple parameters; use QuickSearch by gene name, anatomical location, embryo stage, GEISHA ID, citation keyword, Gene ID, or Gene Ontology keywords; or use Gene Family QuickSearch for genes with regulatory functions during development.
Does GEISHA connect to other expression resources?
Yes, it links directly to ZEBrA in situ hybridization images of genes expressed in the zebra finch brain and provides a human disease gene resource that integrates GEISHA data.
