About GLM-6B (ChatGLM)

ChatGLM-6B is an open-source bilingual (Chinese and English) dialogue language model with 6.2 billion parameters, built on the General Language Model (GLM) architecture. It was trained on roughly 1T Chinese and English tokens with supervised fine-tuning and human feedback reinforcement learning, and with quantization it can be deployed locally on consumer GPUs, needing as little as 6GB of VRAM at the INT4 level.

The repository provides model weights, command-line and web demo scripts, an API script, and instructions for P-Tuning v2 parameter-efficient fine-tuning, which needs about 7GB of VRAM at INT4. Weights are fully open for academic research, and free commercial use is allowed after registering through a questionnaire. The team states it has not developed any applications of its own (web, iOS, Android or Windows), and warns that outputs are not guaranteed accurate and the model can be misled.

Key features

  • Open bilingual Chinese-English dialogue model with 6.2 billion parameters
  • Local deployment on consumer GPUs, 6GB VRAM at INT4 quantization
  • P-Tuning v2 fine-tuning, about 7GB VRAM at INT4
  • Ships CLI, web demo and API scripts
  • Weights open for academic research; commercial use after registration
  • Related releases include VisualGLM-6B, CodeGeeX2 and WebGLM
Best for: Researchers and developers who want to run, study or fine-tune a bilingual dialogue model on their own hardware.
Good for
  • Model weights are freely available for academic research, with free commercial use after registration
  • Quantization enables local deployment on consumer-grade GPUs with modest VRAM
  • Fine-tuning and demo scripts, including CLI, web and API examples, are included in the repository
Watch out for
  • Output accuracy is not guaranteed, and the model can be misled or misused
  • The project team states it has not built any end-user applications such as web, iOS, Android or Windows apps
  • Users are asked not to use the model or its derivatives for harmful purposes or for services lacking safety assessment and registration

GLM-6B (ChatGLM) FAQ

What hardware is needed to run ChatGLM-6B locally?
With INT4 quantization, local deployment requires a minimum of 6GB of GPU memory; starting P-Tuning v2 fine-tuning at the same quantization level requires about 7GB.
Can ChatGLM-6B be used commercially?
The weights are fully open for academic research, and free commercial use is allowed after completing and submitting a registration questionnaire.
Can the model be adapted to a specific application?
The repository implements P-Tuning v2, an efficient parameter fine-tuning method, with a usage guide provided for downstream customization.
