About GPaste

GPaste is a clipboard manager for GNOME. A background daemon records what the user copies, and users can review and reuse earlier items through a GTK 4 interface, a GNOME Shell extension, or a command-line client. History persists across sessions, and several named histories can be kept, switched between, backed up, and deleted separately.

History can be stored as an XML file, a per-history SQLite database, or not at all. Encryption at rest is optional and uses libsodium. Items can be marked as passwords so they appear as a name rather than their contents and are left out of the plain-text history. The project is open source and listed as free. It is packaged for several Linux distributions, and installation details vary by distribution.

Key features

  • Persistent clipboard history across sessions, with several independent named histories
  • Records plain text, rich text, HTML, images, URIs and colours
  • Optional encryption at rest using a libsodium-backed history
  • Choice of XML file, SQLite database, or no stored history
  • Password items shown as names and excluded from plain-text history
  • GNOME Shell extension menu for switching, creating, backing up or deleting histories
Best for: Linux users running GNOME who want a clipboard history manager that integrates with the GNOME Shell.
Good for
  • Free and open source
  • Packaged for Fedora, Arch Linux, Debian, Ubuntu and openSUSE, among others
  • Global shortcuts work the same on Wayland and X11 through the XDG portal
Watch out for
  • Encryption of the history is optional and must be turned on
  • Ubuntu's packaged version lags several major versions behind the current release
  • On X11, other clipboard managers may not recognise GPaste passwords because current GTK cannot serve the marker value

GPaste FAQ

Does GPaste encrypt the clipboard history?
Encryption at rest is available as an optional, libsodium-backed history. The passphrase can optionally be kept in the keyring.
How does GPaste handle copied passwords?
An item marked as a password is shown as a name instead of its contents and is excluded from the plain-text history. A timeout can be set, after which the clipboard stops handing out the item.
How can GPaste be installed?
On Fedora, Arch Linux, Debian, Ubuntu and openSUSE it is available from the system package manager, and it is also packaged in other distributions. After installation, the GNOME Shell extension must be enabled in the Extensions app. It can also be built from source using meson.
