About HISTAT

HISTAT is an online database of historical time series from economic, social science, and historical research. It is organized into studies, and the homepage lists 536 studies containing 436,077 time series. The platform was developed in GESIS by Jürgen Sensch, Rainer Metz, and Gabriele Franzmann, released in 2004, and moved to the Leibniz Institute for Financial Research SAFE on October 15, 2021.

Each study includes metadata such as a detailed description, the sources used, the study area, and additional comments. Metadata can be searched without registration. Registration, use of the database, and data downloads are free of charge. Because data providers shared some data under conditions for dissemination, users are asked to register so that use of that data can be documented. Users must also cite the data sources and related publications, and the site refers to separate recommendations for citing historical data.
