About IPFS

IPFS is a set of tools for content addressing. Data is identified by CIDs, self-describing cryptographic fingerprints based on what the content is rather than where it is stored, which any party can generate and verify.

The same identifiers work across public, hybrid, and private networks with different routing. Content can travel over methods including HTTP, libp2p with Bitswap, iroh-blobs over QUIC, and RASL with verification at the endpoints, and gateways can pull network content and serve it over HTTP for local verification against the CID.

Key features

  • CIDs that identify data by content for verification by any party
  • Addressing for data from a single byte to multi-gigabyte datasets
  • Transport-agnostic delivery over HTTP, libp2p, QUIC, and RASL
  • Endpoint verification of received bytes against the requested CID
  • Public, hybrid, and private network configurations using same CIDs
  • Gateways that serve IPFS content over HTTP for local verification
Best for: Developers building applications that need verifiable, portable data across public or private networks.
Good for
  • Same content-addressing model runs on open internet or closed networks
  • Same CID can travel over different transports with endpoint verification
  • Gateways serve content over HTTP with verification rooted in the CID

IPFS FAQ

What is a CID?
A CID is a self-describing, cryptographic fingerprint of the content, used to address data by what it is rather than where it lives.
How does IPFS work across public, hybrid, and private networks?
The same content-addressing model uses the same CIDs with different routing, including Amino DHT and IPNI for public nodes, encrypted content for hybrid use, and swarm keys for private networks.
What do gateways do?
Gateways pull content from the IPFS network and serve it over HTTP, while verification is done locally against the CID.
