About Kale

Kale (Kubeflow Automated pipeLines Engine) converts Jupyter notebooks into Kubeflow Pipelines workflows. Users tag cells as imports, functions, steps, or skip, and Kale detects dependencies between steps and generates a pipeline without rewriting notebook code.

It can compile and run pipelines from a JupyterLab sidebar action or from the command line. Use requires Python 3.11+, Kubeflow Pipelines v2.16.0+, and access to a Kubernetes cluster.

Key features

  • Convert tagged Jupyter notebook cells into Kubeflow Pipelines workflows
  • Automatically detect variable dependencies between pipeline steps
  • Compile and run pipelines from the JupyterLab sidebar
  • Compile and run pipelines using the command-line interface
  • Define tunable run variables with pipeline-parameters cell tag
  • Exclude exploratory code from pipelines with skip tag
Best for: Data scientists who build models in Jupyter notebooks and deploy to Kubeflow Pipelines.
Good for
  • Open-source repository for notebook-to-pipeline conversion
  • Generates pipelines without rewriting notebook code into components
  • Documents operation without direct knowledge of the KFP SDK
Watch out for
  • Requires Python 3.11 or newer
  • Requires Kubeflow Pipelines v2.16.0 or newer and a Kubernetes cluster
  • PyPI install specifies JupyterLab 4.0.0 or newer
