About Leon

Leon is an open-source personal AI assistant project from GitHub. It is built around tools, context, memory, and agentic execution. Leon can choose how to handle a goal, use tools instead of only replying with text, remember useful information, and run in smart, controlled, or agent mode depending on the task. It is distributed as a repository that users install and run themselves, with Node.js 24.0.0 or later and pnpm. Leon can operate locally and can work with local models. It also supports remote AI providers, so how data is handled depends on which provider is configured.

The project is in a transition. As of the homepage notice dated 2026-03-29, the 2.0 Developer Preview on the develop branch is the current focus. The documentation for the new version is not ready, and the docs site and older guides mostly describe the legacy architecture. The master branch holds the older, more stable pre-agentic version.

Key features

  • Smart, controlled, and agent modes for different kinds of tasks
