About LightSession

LightSession is an open-source browser extension for Firefox and Chrome that reduces lag in long ChatGPT conversations. Long threads keep every message in the page, which can make scrolling, typing, and developer tools slow. The extension intercepts API responses and trims conversation data before the page renders it, so only the most recent messages stay visible in the browser. According to the project's homepage, the conversation stored on OpenAI's side remains intact and the model context is not reduced.

The extension runs only on chat.openai.com and chatgpt.com. Trimming can be reversed by refreshing the page or using the Refresh button in the popup. The Ultra Lean Mode, which applies aggressive CSS optimizations, is labeled experimental. The homepage states that the extension makes zero network requests, stores its settings only in browser.storage.local, and includes no telemetry. Installation from the Firefox Add-ons site or the Chrome Web Store involves those external services.

Key features

  • Intercepts API responses and trims conversation data before React renders it
  • Keeps only the last N messages visible, configurable from 1 to 100
  • Counts messages by role rather than by individual page nodes
  • Optional on-page status pill showing trim statistics
  • Experimental Ultra Lean Mode that disables animations and applies CSS containment
  • Restores the full conversation by refreshing the page
Best for: People who keep very long ChatGPT conversations, such as developers using it for debugging, code reviews, or long refactors, and who find the browser tab slow as the thread grows.
