About Live Meteors

Live Meteors provides a live stream of meteor radio pings (echoes) produced as meteors strike Earth. It explains that terrestrial VHF signals are reflected by ionized trails left when tiny meteors burn up in the upper atmosphere. It also offers viewing through YouTube Live and a real-time data connection for the Radio SkyPipe application.

Detection is limited during Sporadic E, an ionosphere propagation effect specific to summer in the Northern Hemisphere that can last hours or days. During these events the signal from a distant station is reflected by the ionosphere and meteor echoes cannot be detected; a strong continuous signal lasting more than a minute is unlikely to be a meteor echo.

What am I hearing and seeing?
Meteor pings (echoes) from terrestrial VHF signals reflected by ionized trails left when tiny meteors burn up in the upper atmosphere.
Can I get real-time data on my computer?
Yes, you can connect your Radio SkyPipe application to LiveMeteors.com to get real-time data; instructions are provided.
What is a strong continuous signal lasting more than a minute?
It is unlikely to be a meteor echo. It may be Sporadic E ionosphere propagation, during which meteor echoes cannot be detected.
