About Microsoft Agent Framework

Microsoft Agent Framework is for building individual AI agents and multi-agent workflows in .NET, Python, and Go. Agents use language models to process inputs, call tools and MCP servers, and generate responses, with support for providers including Microsoft Foundry, Azure OpenAI, OpenAI, Anthropic, and Ollama. It also provides a Harness Agent for multi-step tasks, functional and graph-based workflows, and building blocks such as model clients, agent sessions, context providers, middleware, and MCP clients.

The Go version is in public preview and does not yet include declarative agents, RAG, CodeAct, and functional workflows. The framework does not automatically load .env files, so environment variables must be set directly or loaded manually.

Key features

  • Build individual agents that call tools and MCP servers
  • Connect to Foundry, Azure OpenAI, OpenAI, Anthropic, Ollama
  • Use Harness Agent with planning, todo tracking and context compaction
  • Create functional and graph-based multi-agent workflows
  • Manage state with agent sessions and context providers
  • Intercept agent actions with middleware

Microsoft Agent Framework FAQ

When should I use an agent versus a workflow?
Use an agent for open-ended or conversational tasks with autonomous tool use. Use a workflow for well-defined steps that need explicit execution order or coordination between agents and functions. If a function can handle the task, use a function instead of an agent.
Does Agent Framework load .env files automatically?
No. Call load_dotenv() at the start of the application or set environment variables directly in the shell or IDE.
Is Go support complete?
No. The Agent Framework for Go is in public preview, and declarative agents, RAG, CodeAct, and functional workflows are not yet available.
