About MyPhysicsLab

MyPhysicsLab is a website of interactive physics simulations. Examples include single and double pendulums, springs, colliding blocks, rigid bodies, roller coasters, billiards, and molecules. Each simulation animates in real time, and users can drag objects or change parameters such as gravity and damping.

Simulation pages show how the underlying math is derived, and the site describes the steps used to solve the equations numerically. The simulations do not use specified units such as meters or seconds. The units are dimensionless and must be interpreted consistently within each simulation. The site's source code is published under the Apache 2.0 License, and downloadable versions are available for offline use.

Key features

  • Real-time animated simulations of pendulums, springs, rigid bodies, and molecules
  • Drag objects or change parameters such as gravity and damping
  • Share button generates a URL that reproduces a simulation setup
  • Scripts with JavaScript or EasyScript for numeric data and collision data
  • Rigid body physics engine that handles collisions and contact forces
  • Downloadable versions of simulations for use when offline
Best for: Students and teachers who want to explore classical mechanics concepts by changing parameters and observing the results.
Good for
  • Simulations animate in real time and can be changed while running
  • Simulation pages explain how the mathematical models are derived
  • Source code is published under the Apache 2.0 License
Watch out for
  • Simulations have no specified units, so users must interpret values consistently

MyPhysicsLab FAQ

Do the simulations use real units of measurement?
No. The simulations do not have units such as meters, kilograms, or seconds specified. The units are dimensionless and can be interpreted by the user, but they must be consistent within each simulation.
How can I share a simulation setup with someone else?
Click the share button and copy the URL from the dialog. When the recipient opens the URL, the embedded EasyScript recreates the conditions you set up.
Can the simulations be used without an internet connection?
Downloadable versions are available that can be used to show simulations offline, when not connected to the internet.
