About nb

nb is a command-line and local web application for plain-text notes, bookmarks, archives, and knowledge-base content. It stores notes in text-based formats such as Markdown, Org, LaTeX, and AsciiDoc, and supports tagging, pinning, filtering, search, folders, and wiki-style links. It can create private, password-protected encrypted notes and bookmarks. Git runs in the background to record changes and sync notebooks with remote repositories. Notebooks can also be synced with a general-purpose utility such as Dropbox.

The bookmarking tools save page content as Markdown documents, which can be browsed in terminal or GUI web browsers and searched with regular expressions. For broken links, nb can look up Internet Archive Wayback Machine snapshots. nb runs in standard Linux and Unix environments and on macOS. On Windows it runs through WSL, MSYS, or Cygwin. Bash is required, and several features are enhanced by optional tools that must be installed separately.
