About Nopaste

Nopaste is an open-source paste service for storing and sharing code through generated links. Instead of using a database or backend code, it compresses text with LZMA, encodes it in Base64, and places it in the URL fragment after the # symbol, where it is decoded in the browser.

It includes syntax highlighting, embeddable snippets via iframe code, offline use after the first visit, and command-line link creation. Snippet size is constrained by maximum URL lengths in browsers and apps, and a paste is available only to those who retain the full link.

Key features

  • Compresses text with LZMA and stores it in URL fragment
  • Syntax highlighting with language selector and line numbers
  • Embeds snippets in other websites using generated iframe code
  • Works offline after first visit via browser cache
  • Generates links from command line with lzma and base64
  • Can be self-hosted as static files on a file server
Best for: People sharing small code snippets who prefer link-contained storage over server storage.
Good for
  • No database or backend; paste processing happens in the browser
  • Links are described as working on any Nopaste clone, including self-hosted copies
  • Static files allow self-hosting, including with GitHub Pages
Watch out for
  • Snippet size is limited by maximum URL lengths in browsers and sharing apps
  • A paste can only be opened if the full link has been kept

Nopaste FAQ

How does Nopaste store pastes without a database?
It compresses the text with LZMA, encodes it in Base64, and puts it in the URL fragment after #. Opening the link decodes and decompresses that fragment in the browser.
Can Nopaste be used offline?
Yes, after the first visit the code is saved in the browser cache, so links can be opened without an internet connection.
Can I put a Nopaste snippet on my own website?
Yes, use the Embed button to get HTML iframe code, adjusting the height and width attributes as needed.
