About NSF GAGE Facility

The NSF GAGE Facility, also called the NSF National Geophysical Facility (NGF), is operated by the EarthScope Consortium. It provides access to geodetic data that researchers use to measure motion of rock, ice, and water at or near the Earth's surface. Data types include GNSS, synthetic aperture radar (SAR), lidar and structure-from-motion (SfM), borehole strain, seismic, tilt and pore pressure, and tropospheric data. The source describes processed results that can show millimeter-scale surface motion at discrete points and high-resolution strain imagery over areas from tens of square meters to hundreds of square kilometers.

Most data types can be accessed through web services. Archived datasets are available under the EarthScope Data License (CC BY 4.0), and data users are responsible for attribution. Requests for support or custom data acquisition are handled through a data help page.

Key features

  • GNSS raw measurements, processed site positions, and geologic velocities
  • InSAR and SAR data for modeling Earth surface displacement
  • Terrestrial laser scanning and lidar/SfM data for 3-D surface measurements
  • Borehole strain, seismic, tilt, and pore pressure datasets
  • Tropospheric products, including surface meteorological and precipitable water vapor data
  • Web services for GNSS site metadata, positions, velocities, and borehole data
Best for: Geodetic and geophysical researchers who need GNSS, radar, lidar, strain, or seismic data to study surface motion.
Good for
  • GNSS datasets, TLS datasets, and InSAR products are assigned digital object identifiers.
  • Web services use consistent interfaces to provide unified access to many data types.
  • Operated by the EarthScope Consortium, a non-profit university-governed consortium, and holds ICSU WDS Regular Member certification since 2015.
Watch out for
  • Most data types can be accessed through web services, but the source does not say all can.
  • Borehole pore pressure data has no processed products; only raw data is provided.
  • Data users are solely responsible for following the license and attribution requirements.
