NSynth Super
An experimental physical interface for the NSynth machine learning algorithm.

About NSynth Super
NSynth Super is an experimental physical instrument built as an interface to the NSynth (Neural Synthesizer) machine learning algorithm. It comes from Magenta, a research project within Google, in collaboration with Google Creative Lab, and is part of ongoing work on making the output of NSynth easier to play. Musicians select among four source sounds per dial and drag a finger across a touchscreen to move between new sounds that carry the acoustic qualities of the selected sources; the instrument can be played through any MIDI source such as a DAW, sequencer or keyboard.
Key features
- Touchscreen navigation across more than 100,000 precomputed NSynth-generated sounds
- Four dials, each assigned four source sounds to explore between
- Plays via any MIDI source, including DAW, sequencer or keyboard
- Envelope controls for refining the sound
- Sounds precomputed from 16 studio-recorded source sounds across 15 pitches
- Source code, schematics and design templates available on GitHub
- Based on open source libraries including TensorFlow and openFrameworks, so a wider community of artists, coders and researchers can experiment
- NSynth generates sounds at the level of individual samples, giving intuitive control over timbre and dynamics
- Offers access to a large set of new sounds that combine the acoustic qualities of four source sounds at once
- An experience prototype shared with a small community of musicians rather than a released product
- Sound exploration is limited to the precomputed set generated from 16 source sounds across 15 pitches
- No price or general availability is stated
