About OpenFOAM

OpenFOAM is a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) toolbox for simulation workflows. It addresses fluid flows involving chemical reactions, turbulence and heat transfer, as well as acoustics, solid mechanics and electromagnetics.

It is developed and managed by OpenCFD Ltd, with new versions scheduled every six months in June and December that include community contributions and customer-sponsored developments. Releases are checked with daily unit tests, weekly test batteries, and larger industry-based tests before a new version.

Key features

  • Solves fluid flows involving reactions, turbulence and heat transfer
  • Models acoustics simulations
  • Models solid mechanics simulations
  • Models electromagnetics simulations
  • Publishes releases on a June and December schedule
  • Incorporates community contributions and sponsored developments
Best for: Engineers and scientists in commercial and academic organisations who run fluid-flow and related physics simulations.
Good for
  • Covers fluid dynamics plus acoustics, solid mechanics and electromagnetics
  • Follows a regular June and December release schedule
  • Uses daily, weekly and pre-release testing for regression, memory, performance and scalability
